3. Leadership Theories

Before the beginning of 20th century strong management skills were more valued than the leadership skills. It is only from the beginning of the 20th century, the scientific studies on leadership began its course. Literature suggests that the early works focussed on the broad conceptualisation of leadership, such the behaviour, characteristics and the traits of a leader. However, modern day research focusses on the leadership process as an element for influencing other people in an organisation, its organisational culture and the relationships perceived between the leader and the followers (Marquis & Huston, 2009). This chapter provides a brief view of the evolution in leadership theories in the last few decades.
